The Morgan MaxCalibur Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece was designed by Erik Greiffenhagen in 2021 as a brighter, more powerful variation of our popular Excalibur Medium Chamber model. It uses the same medium round chamber as the Excalibur, combined with a moderate shelf baffle for increased projection, brilliance and response.
The result is a powerful alto mouthpiece with plenty of edge and projection while retaining a full-bodied tone. The MaxCalibur responds quickly throughout the range, with an easy upper register and altissimo response.
Like most of our handcrafted Morgan models, the MaxCalibur is made from Morgan’s proprietary hard rubber formulation. The facing curve, rails, chamber and baffle are individually shaped and finished by hand using traditional mouthpiece-making techniques.

Choosing a Size
The Morgan MaxCalibur Alto is available in tip openings from .075" to .090", offering a range of choices for resistance, flexibility and reed setup.
Most Popular: 7 (.080") — Our best-selling size and an excellent starting point for players looking for a versatile balance of response, flexibility, projection and control.
The smaller openings provide greater resistance and control, while the larger openings offer progressively more flexibility and room to shape the sound.

Handcrafted the Morgan Way
Ralph Morgan founded Morgan Mouthpieces with the goal of preserving the art and science of the traditionally handcrafted mouthpiece. The materials, tools and techniques used in our handcrafted models reflect the mouthpiece-making traditions of the 1940s and 1950s.
The MaxCalibur begins with Morgan’s proprietary hard rubber formulation, molded and cured to our specifications. The facing, rails, chamber and baffle are then individually shaped and finished by hand using traditional tools rather than CNC machining.
This hands-on approach has been central to Morgan Mouthpieces from the beginning and remains an important part of how our handcrafted mouthpieces are made today.

Morgan mouthpiece products are not available in retail stores. Because we deal directly with you, we can afford to keep our prices lower and customer service high. No one knows and understands our mouthpieces like we do.
We offer a 10-day trial that starts the day you receive your shipment. So, you can play the mouthpieces without distraction in your preferred setting.
Purchase up to 3 mouthpieces in different models or sizes for side-by-side trial. Keep what you love and if you are not satisfied, return for a refund the mouthpiece(s) in the original packaging in new clean unmarked condition.
- We ship free in the USA on orders over $200! International orders ship Fedex Economy for $45.
- Use a tooth patch on each mouthpiece to prevent bite marks/scratches. Kindly remove tooth patches prior to returning mouthpieces.
- For returns, use a ship service of your choice such as US Postal Service or UPS. (We do not provide return shipping labels)

Restock Fees
- If you purchase 1 mouthpiece and return it, there is a $20 restock fee if the item is valued under $499.00. Purchases valued over $500.00 are subject to a restock fee of $25.
- If you purchase up to 3 mouthpieces, keep at least 1 and return the others, there is a flat $25 restock fee for USA customers.

Care Instructions
Clean with 3:1 water/vinegar ratio and buff with soft cloth. Do not immerse mouthpieces containing cork. Use spray bottle with solution, avoiding cork area and dry and buff with soft cotton cloth.

We know if can be difficult getting the right mouthpiece on the first try. We're happy to exchange models/sizes to suit your needs. For USA customers, an $8.00 return shipping charge applies when we exchange to a new item. For International customers, the return shipping charge for an exchange is $45.00. I really enjoyed playing my EG Houseblend on my tenor sax and was looking for a similar mouthpiece for my alto. One with power when you need it without the instability of a step baffle mouthpiece, easy blowing, rich bottom end, sweet upper register.
Erik and Theresa were a pleasure to work with to make it happen modifying an existing product to create a large round chamber mouthpiece with thin rails and walls , rollover baffle, perfect facing curve, and flat table. I enjoy playing it.

This review is a tough one for me because this is an outstanding mouthpiece, and I love Morgan Mouthpieces. So what's tough about it? I am already currently playing on a Morgan Excalibur alto mouthpiece; it has an incredible sonority--brilliant, harmonically rich, and tons of power. Its table is flat, the curve is perfect, and the rails are balanced--it's a great piece. But I wanted a touch more brilliance and maybe even a little more punch out of the Excalibur, and I was hoping the Excalibur Max would deliver on this. Well, it didn't.
The Excalibur Max has a flat table, a perfect curve, and balanced rails--all Morgan standards--but this high baffled piece lacked the brilliance of the standard Excalibur and the mouthpiece's punch is the same as the standard Excalibur.
I don't know why the one sample of the Excalibur Max I experienced didn't deliver on the advertised enhanced brilliance/brightness and power. Perhaps my Morgan Excalibur is exemplary? Perhaps there is a difference in floor height (the area behind the baffle closer to the chamber). I don't know why it didn't deliver to my expectations.
Alternatively, the Excalibur Max is still an outstanding mouthpiece. It is at least as powerful as the standard Excalibur (maybe other samples are more powerful). It has a beautiful thickness to the sound, but the upper partials are diminished somehow compared to my Morgan Excalibur.
These are handmade mouthpieces, so there will be some slight variation among the pieces. My experience was not as anticipated, but it's possible that yours will be. Perhaps other samples of this piece will deliver more punch and brightness than your current Excalibur. Only playtesting this piece will let you hear. Give it a try; it's still an excellent mouthpiece.
