I am very happy with this mouthpiece. it is exactly what I was looking for, a warm sounding mouthpiece that can cut through when I need it too.
Absolutely tremendous mouthpiece! Recommended to me by a band director for jazz.
My fifth Morgan mouthpiece, third Tenor flavour... says it all, right?
The Excalibur 8L gives me just the little sparkle over the Jazz 8L that I need for my Balanced Action to be my mainstay. The Jazz 8L matches a Conn 10M nicely for vintage-y styles while an Excalibur 8M makes my Mark VI the go-to for modern style work.
Ralph Morgan's stellar designs just work for me on any horn with great consistency. The pieces also are very reed-friendly: I use them with Marca reeds and have hardly any bad reeds at all - and they last like "forever" on the Morgans.
Unfortunately, this time the Rovner Light packaged with the piece was one size too big and the table wasn't 100% level at the cutout causing squeaks at large intervals.
Took a spare lig from my drawer and could fix the table myself with sanding paper so no need to send the whole thing back overseas (which is not a bargain at 40$ but went lightning fast with FedEx). Meanwhile, the piece plays like a charm, just like the four other pieces I have - but still this is not exactly what I got used to from earlier purchases.
My Excalibur mouthpieces are the best I have, and I all I need. This L model is no exception. The workmanship is the highest quality, and the playability and tone are exceptional. I'm happy I found these. I'd have gone this route a long time ago had I known.
Last year, after playing the same metal jazz mouthpiece for over 20 years, I decided to go hard rubber as part of moving to a warmer, more traditional tone. After a little research, the Excalibur seemed the perfect solution; which it was. I now I have the M, FL, and L models, as I felt having nailed it first time I should really explore several options. I'm happy I did that too. I'm keeping them all—each has a useful tonal character, yet are equally playable and exceptional—sometimes you're in the mood for a different bit of spice, you know. They're all the same tip opening, and I'm using the Morgan Marc-Jean inverted ligature designed for them. Also, I recently started using Firbracell® synthetic reeds which fit and play great on these Excaliburs.
So, mischief managed, with not a lot of fussing about to get the perfect hard rubber mouthpiece setup. I'll be solely playing my Excaliburs from now on. Thanks to the Morgan crew for a great quality product at a reasonable price and fast service. 5-stars.
This is a great mouthpiece. Beautiful craftsmanship. The mouthpiece is a perfect match for my vintage horns. It is free blowing, and a touch bright, and most importantly, it plays in tune! Those vintage horns need a large chambered mouthpiece, otherwise they can blow quite sharp. I'm really happy with the Excalibur, and I recommend it.
