Museum Quality "Kind of Blue" Alto Saxophone mouthpiece

The Morgan "Kind of Blue" Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece was recreated from the original mouthpiece played by Cannonball Adderley on Miles Davis' landmark 1959 recording Kind of Blue. The original Cannonball Adderley mouthpiece is now part of the Smithsonian's collection, along with a Morgan "Kind of Blue" mouthpiece representing the modern recreation.

Developed with acclaimed alto saxophonist Jim Snidero, longtime custodian of Cannonball Adderley's original mouthpiece, the Morgan Kind of Blue was designed to capture the sound, response and intonation characteristics of the original. It is available in multiple tip openings; Cannonball's original mouthpiece had a size 5 (.072") tip opening, which he paired with a medium to medium-hard reed.

“I’ve been looking for a mouthpiece like this for about 25 years now, so I’m really thrilled to finally have something that satisfies me. Many thanks and best wishes” - Kurt B., New York

The History of Cannonball Adderley’s Mouthpiece

When Cannonball Adderley passed away in 1975, prominent Los Angeles alto saxophonist Bill Green acquired some of Cannonball’s equipment, including his mouthpieces, from Cannonball’s wife, Olga James. Another prominent Los Angeles alto saxophonist, Dave Edwards, was a good friend of Bill, who graciously gave Dave Cannonball’s mouthpieces.

In the 1990s, Jim Snidero became friends with Dave after moving from Los Angeles to Orlando. Following Dave’s sudden passing in 2000, his wife, Phyllis Edwards, gifted Jim the mouthpiece Cannonball Adderley used on Kind of Blue.

Jim has been the custodian of this historic mouthpiece ever since. Below is a side-by-side comparison of Cannonball Adderley’s original mouthpiece and the Morgan Kind of Blue alto saxophone mouthpiece.
